NSW:Serial pedophile jailed for 20 years

A serial pedophile has been jailed for at least 20 years for abusing four boys over
three decades.

53-yar-old ANDREW DEAN MCINTOSH was found guilty in May of 18 charges against three
boys, including buggery and indecent assault between 1979 and 1984.

At an earlier trial last year, he was found guilty of 24 charges related to the sexual
and physical abuse of a student at Barker College in Sydney's north in the early 1990s.

At the time, he was a volunteer cadet master at the private school.

In the Downing Centre District Court today, Judge MICHAEL FINNANE QC sentenced MCINTOSH
on all 42 charges to 32 years in prison with a non-parole period of 20 years.

MCINTOSH, he said, had shown no remorse for the damage he'd done, and the community
had to be protected from him.

MCINTOSH'S four victims cheered and clapped as the sentence was read out.

FED:Detainees to sleep on roof for sixth night

By Lema Samandar

SYDNEY, April 25 AAP - The three detainees on the roof of Sydney's Villawood Detention
Centre could be sleeping on top of the building for a sixth night as negotiations to get
them down continue to be unsuccessful.

Social Justice Network spokesman Jamal Daoud says because of the way the immigration
department is handling the situation, the three men could be on the roof until at least
Tuesday morning.

Mr Daoud says the protesters were told by negotiators that a representative from the
UN High Commissioner for Refugees had arrived to talk to them, but they didn't believe
it.

"It could be that the government just wanted to give them false hope to come down.

They did this with the Chinese asylum seekers last year," Mr Daoud told AAP.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Immigration said security company Serco had been
handling all the negotiations and no details of the process could be revealed.

On Monday afternoon, hundreds of refugee supporters gathered outside the detention
centre to support the three detainees protesting on the rooftop who have been supplied
with water but not food.

However, the centre's other detainees were in lockdown, unable to communicate with the crowd.

The supporters marched the two kilometres from Chester Hill Railway Station to the
detention centre in Sydney's southwest to show their solidarity with those on the other
side of the fence.

"Freedom!" they chanted, and the cry was returned by the men on the roof.

The three men have been protesting since Wednesday.

On Wednesday night a riot involving 100 detainees left nine buildings at the centre
gutted by fire.

Twenty-two of the alleged rioters were taken to Sydney's Silverwater jail.

Majid Parhizkar, 24, from Iran, and stateless Kurdish men Mehdi and Amir, whose applications
for asylum have been twice rejected, are refusing to come down from the roof.

Majid's brother Hadi, 25, has been camping outside the detention centre since Thursday
and said he was worried about his brother, who has been without food since the protest
began.

"It's not good, he's very hungry and they can't resolve the problem," Hadi told reporters
at the scene.

"It's dangerous for him and I want (him to come down).

"We came to Australia together two years ago and I was accepted after six months and
Majid has not been and we want to know the reason."

His brother could not go back to Iran because he might be killed for converting to
Christianity, Hadi said.

Majid felt as if he had nothing to lose and if he came down from the rooftop he might
be sent to jail or be deported, he said.

The refugee supporters maintained a one-minute silence for Anzac Day, as police and
detention centre security guards closely monitored the area.

VIC:Lead in Crawford cold case collapses

A chance for police to solve one of Victoria's oldest cold cases has collapsed .. with
DNA evidence ruling out a major lead.

Victoria Police have determined that the unidentified body of an elderly man in Texas
is not ELMER CRAWFORD .. accused of murdering his wife and their three children in 1970
near Port Campbell.

Detectives have used DNA from a CRAWFORD blood relative to compare with DNA from an
unknown man .. who died of a heart attack five years ago in Texas.

The man had used fake IDs in four different names.

While facial recognition experts concluded this year that the mystery man could be
CRAWFORD .. a DNA test has ruled out that possibility .. meaning a 100 thousand reward
still stands in the 40-year case.

CRAWFORD would be 81 if he was still alive.

FED: Bigger, louder, sexier, stronger Iron Man sequel

FED: Bigger, louder, sexier, stronger Iron Man sequel

By Alyssa Braithwaite, National Entertainment Writer

SYDNEY, AAP - World peace - it's the top wish of beauty pageant contestants everywhere.

But it's just no good for superheroes.

In Iron Man's second big-screen outing, it's six months later and billionaire inventor
Tony Stark's super-powerful armoured suit has attracted the attention of warmongers and
terrorists.

Acting as a deterrent, it prompts an unprecedented period of peace - East/West relations
are at an all-time high and nations are co-operating.

But that wouldn't make for a very exciting sequel to the hit 2008 film, would it?

"Yeah, we'd have a very boring movie," says Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau, laughing.

"Peace is great in real life, but when you go to the movies you want to see things blow up.

"So we get around to that, and that's where Mickey Rourke comes in."

Rourke plays Whiplash, a Russian underworld character who takes on Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man.

Also added to the sequel are Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Samuel L Jackson as
Nick Fury, Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer, and Don Cheadle replacing Terrence Howard as
War Machine.

It's all part of the superhero movie rule that any sequel must be bigger, brighter,
louder, sexier, stronger and more explosive.

Favreau said that was top of his brief when he took on the film.

"I think you've got to outdo the first one because you're not going to get by on the
charm of being your first time out," he says.

"Nobody expected anything from us the first time, so we got a bit of a free pass. This
time they'll be comparing us to the first one, and in this particular genre often times
the second film is as good as, if not better than the first.

"I wanted the battle to be bigger and a lot more fun, because now Iron Man is a full-on
superhero ... he's the guy who flies all around the world wherever he's needed. It's a
big, big, big story."

But back to that big, big, big cast.

With Academy Award winners Rourke and Gwyneth Paltrow on the credits, and Oscar nominees
Downey Jr, Cheadle and Jackson also among their number, there's a lot of talent in Iron
Man 2.

Favreau jokes you don't have to be an Oscar winner to be in an Iron Man movie, but it helps.

"No, you've got to be an Oscar nominee," he laughs.

"I'm not a snob. I like nominees better than winners."

Most of the cast were hand-picked by Favreau, who fought hard to get Downey Jr the
lead in the original film.

He says he wanted Rourke after seeing him in Sin City and The Wrestler.

"I need somebody who's going to hold the screen opposite Robert," Favreau explains.

"Last time we had Geoff Bridges, who did a fine job clearly, he just won the Oscar
and he's somebody who has a tremendous presence on screen.

"We made Rourke a Russian underworld character, covered head to toe with tattoos, and
he's just sort of an evil genius."

Johansson, on the other hand, fought hard for the role of Natasha Romanoff, aka the Black Widow.

She died her hair red for her meeting with Favreau, to make it easier for him to imagine
her in the part.

"She definitely pursued the role. She came after it very hard," Favreau says.

Johansson spent months in the gym making her famously curvy body more athletic, and
worked with stunt co-ordinators and did wire work in preparation for the role.

"She was probably the hardest working person on that set, of that cast," Favreau says.

"She's in a very revealing costume as well, so not only did she look great but you
really buy her as this trained killer.

"I would have never guessed that seeing her previous roles. She's always the sultry,
sexy, curvy temptress, or the femme fatale of sorts."

With a top-shelf cast on board, a hugely successful first film, and the hard work setting
up the story done in the original, Favreau says everyone involved in Iron Man 2 tried
to take things up a notch this time.

Whether or not audiences respond as enthusiastically remains to be seen.

"We have our audience, so the challenge now is to do something that's surprising but
still maintain consistency of the first film," Favreau says.

"We like the story we're telling a lot so we have a lot of fun making it and I think
that comes through."

SA: Public schools face further strike action

SA: Public schools face further strike action

ADELAIDE, Aug 17 AAP - Public schools in South Australia will face further strike action
next month unless the state government improves on its wages and conditions offer currently
being negotiated, the teachers' union says.

About 100 Australian Education Union (AEU) delegates yesterday voted to hold two days
of strike action unless the government meets a deadline of September 8 to improve its
offer.

The enterprise bargaining negotiations have dragged on for most of this year, with
teachers seeking a 21 per cent pay rise over the next three years and the government offering
only 9.75 per cent.

SA public schools have so far been closed for a full-day strike and a week of half-day
rolling stoppages.

AEU state co-vice president Anne Crawford told AAP that if an improved offer was not
made by the government, the union's executive would meet to determine the exact nature
of the further closures.

"Exactly what form that would take - whole days, half days - would be determined when
the branch executive meets on the 8th of September," she said.

The union is also seeking changes to the government's new proposed funding model for
schools which, it says, would further harm disadvantaged schools and not ensure the best
educational outcome for all students.

Ms Crawford said the deadline provided "a window of opportunity" to avoid more industrial action.

"Clearly, we don't set out with the intent of disrupting schools and we've tried for
months and months to resolve this dispute and will continue to try very, very hard and
we believe the September 8 deadline does provide the government with the opportunity to
come up with an improved offer," she said.

She indicated the union remained willing to negotiate on its position.

"We are realistic to know we don't get everything on the claim," she said.

"We believe there's room to move on both sides."

Meetings between union and government representatives will continue this week.

A spokeswoman for state Industrial Minister Paul Caica said the minister would be "very
disappointed" if teachers continued their industrial action, as it was not the way to
resolve the dispute.

Continued negotiation was the only way to find a solution and the union had to "move,
just as the government has to move", she said.

CHN: Rudd's message on Tibet angers Chinese officials

CHN: Rudd's message on Tibet angers Chinese officials

By Sandra O'Malley, Diplomatic Correspondent

BEIJING, April 9 AAP - Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has delivered a blunt message to China
in a speech in Beijing, saying there are significant human rights problems in Tibet.

Speaking in Mandarin to hundreds of Chinese students, Mr Rudd said Australians were
concerned about the situation in Tibet, where Chinese forces have mounted a bloody crackdown
on dissidents.

Chinese officials reacted angrily during a press conference televised live across the
nation, calling Mr Rudd's comments totally unfounded.

But, ignoring a diplomatic protest against similar comments last week, Mr Rudd said
all parties needed to find a peaceful solution and called for Chinese officials to talk
directly with the Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama.

He vowed to raise his concerns directly with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao when they meet
at the Great Hall of the People tomorrow.

"Australia, like most other countries, recognises China's sovereignty over Tibet,"

Mr Rudd told the students at Peking University, hours after arriving in Beijing.

"But we also believe it is necessary to recognise there are significant human rights
problem in Tibet.

"The current situation in Tibet is of concern to Australians.

"We recognise the need for all parties to avoid violence and find a solution through dialogue.

"As a long-standing friend of China I intend to have a straightforward discussion with
China's leaders on this."

The speech was the first event of Mr Rudd's four-day visit to China and is set to dominate
his discussions with Premier Wen and President Hu Jintao.

Tibetan Regional Government chairman Xiangba Puncog later told a press conference in
Beijing that the comments were "totally unfounded".

"Australia, or other countries, should have better appreciation and understanding of
the fact that people in Tibet are now enjoying democracy and have wonderful human rights
protection," he said.

"Those remarks are totally unfounded."

Mr Rudd told reporters he stood by his comments and played down their impact on the
relationship between the two countries.

"You have a relationship which is capable of handling disagreement and putting views
in a straightforward fashion," he said.

"That's what I said I'd be doing in my remarks earlier today and that's what I will be doing.

"I stand by the comments I made earlier on this matter."

But Mr Rudd has also risked angering China by backing the right of protesters to target
the Olympic torch relay, which will arrive in Canberra on April 24.

"People can express their view in whatever way they want ... I'm sure people will make
their own call on that," Mr Rudd said in Beijing.

Chinese officials had already raised Mr Rudd's earlier comments on Tibet with Australian
ambassador Geoff Raby in Beijing, and in Canberra, Chinese ambassador Zhang Junsai conveyed
the protest to an Australian foreign affairs official.

However, a Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) spokesman said no formal
written complaint had been lodged.

Mr Rudd said relations with China would always be complex.

"The relationship with China is always going to be complex, it's always going to be
challenging. I accept that," he said.

"I made those comments in Washington, I stand by them. I think this relationship is
broad enough to tolerate disagreement."

Despite his comments on Tibet, the university students gave Mr Rudd a warm reception,
praising his command of their language.

Everyone who asked a question made note of the special understanding the former diplomat
has of their culture.

Mr Rudd won the students over with a number of jokes, including one about his study
of Chinese calligraphy during his days at the Australian National University.

Calligraphy was not his forte, he admitted.

"My calligraphy was ugly then - and it's even uglier now," he said.

Mr Rudd was due to speak to business leaders at a financial services lunch and attend
a cultural exhibition tonight.

CANBERRA, Dec 22 AAP - Even if it is a scorching day on Monday, Prime Minister John
Howard and his family will sit down to a traditional roast turkey Christmas dinner.

"It's a very normal, typical Christmas," Mr Howard told the Nine Network today.

The Howards' Christmas Day will start with church, making sure not to rush in to the
present opening.

"We go to church in the morning, then we come home and we go around and see some ...

old friends in Greenwich and then we go back and open presents and have lunch and then
the extended Howard family come and see us in the evening," he said.

They will not follow many Australians into seafood lunches, instead sticking with the
English roast dinner.

"We're strictly turkey - we're very traditional - I mean the turkey and ham we're very
into that, maybe a bit of seafood in the evening."

And it will be Mrs Howard, Janette, slaving away in the kitchen.

"We are all the beneficiaries of that because she's a fabulous cook," he said.

There is no time for the prime minister to relax over the festive season, but he will
try with a touch of cricket.

"Your mind is always on it (the job) but I will have time off in January. I will go
to every day of the Sydney Test and I may go down to Melbourne for a day or two," he said.

Mr Howard is keen to catch Shane Warne's last days on the pitch before his retirement

Fed: Govt flags more changes to drought assistance

AAP General News (Australia)
08-08-2005
Fed: Govt flags more changes to drought assistance

CANBERRA, Aug 8 AAP - The federal government has flagged more changes to its drought
aid scheme after claims that hundreds of millions of dollars are not getting to needy
farming families.

While government departments budgeted to spend more than $1 billion over two years
on drought assistance, only 40 cents in the dollar has reached those who need it, an investigation
by Fairfax newspapers has found.

The system for handling payments has been complex and full of anomalies, with the example
of one family being cut off because it had a trust - even though there was no money in
it.

While hundreds of millions in unspent money is returned to the Finance Department,
federal ministers have repeatedly claimed they are giving $1 billion to struggling families.

Agriculture Minister Peter McGauran said the assistance was demand driven and was not
capped. He believed at least $1 billion would still be spent during the current drought.

While eligibility criteria has been relaxed, Mr McGauran said the focus should now
be on simplifying the application process for farmers.

"The paperwork is too onerous," he told the John Laws radio program today.

"I think there's still too much red tape, we've got to make it simpler.

"I do think those farmers who meet the eligibility criteria eventually get through
the obstacle course but it's too taxing and wearing on them."

The government announced an extra $250 million in drought aid in late May after it
became clear there was no end in sight to one of the worst droughts on record.

The measures included doubling the threshold in the off-farm assets test to $440,000
and raising the off-farm income test limit by $10,000 to $41,000.

A week later, the Australian National Audit Office report said farmers often found
the process of applying for drought aid confusing because of differences in application
processes and information and eligibility requirements.

Despite the deficiencies, the report said the delivery of drought assistance was largely
"accurate and timely".

Mr McGauran rejected the claim that vast amounts of money was not getting to farmers
who needed it.

"We've spent $750 million already, which is about $4 million a week," he said.

"I think on our best estimates we will get to $1.3 billion before the drought is concluded.

"We will spend as much money as it requires, that's not the issue, so I think that's
a bit of sideshow."

As well as making it easier to apply for drought assistance, Mr McGauran said the system
of defining boundaries for Exceptional Circumstances declarations - currently a state
responsibility - needed to be reviewed.

(NYSE: GDI), a leading manufacturer of compressors and blowers for industrial applications and pumps for petroleum and industrial markets, announced that revenues for the three months ended June 30, 2000 were $94.0 million and diluted earnings per share for the same period were $0.30.

Revenues increased by 10% over the second quarter of 1999. Petroleum products revenues were up 101%, driven by strong well-stimulation pump sales. Compressed air products revenues increased by 3% due to acquisitions. Excluding acquisitions, compressed air products revenues fell by 4% (approximately two-thirds of which was due to foreign currency exchange rate changes).

Gross profit margins (defined as revenues less cost of sales) as a percent of revenues were approximately three percentage points lower in the second quarter of 2000 compared to the same period of 1999. This decrease was due to significantly unfavorable sales mix (including lower parts/aftermarket sales of compressed air products), increased manufacturing overhead spending (including engineering, product development and lean manufacturing initiatives), and deleverage on the lower volume in the base compressed air products business.

Net income for the quarter was $4.6 million, down 22% from the same period last year. This decrease was due primarily to the lower gross profit margins discussed above plus higher levels of depreciation and amortization and interest expense due to capital spending, acquisitions and higher interest rate levels.

Ross J. Centanni, Chairman, President and CEO, said, "The results for the quarter, particularly compressed air products revenues and operating earnings, were well below what we had expected early in the year. The actions taken by the Federal Reserve to increase interest rates and dampen economic activity have had a significantly negative impact on the sectors of the manufacturing economy served by our compressed air products segment."

Looking forward, Mr. Centanni further stated, "Unless there is a significant increase in order activity, I would anticipate earnings in the third quarter to be at approximately the same levels as a year ago. We believe these depressed sales levels should not continue much beyond the third quarter and because of our ongoing product development and lean manufacturing initiatives we are well-positioned to benefit when demand increases. In addition, inquiry levels have increased for petroleum drilling pumps and we are optimistic that sales should begin to pick up in this area by the fourth quarter."

Comparisons of the financial results for the three and six month periods ended June 30, 2000 and 1999 follow.

WIOCC partners with Global Crossing to expand global footprint.(SUBMARINE)

To meet the rapid growth in demand for cost-effective, high-quality, end-to-end connectivity between Africa and the rest of the world, WIOCC--the largest shareholder in the highest-capacity, submarine cable system serving Africa--announced the interconnection of its network with that of Global Crossing, global IP solutions provider.

This strategic agreement will enable WIOCC to further extend its customers' connectivity in countries where it previously did not have coverage, by making it part of the Global Crossing Tier 1 MPLS network--http://www. globalcrossing.com/network/network_interactive_map.aspx.

In addition to expanding WIOCC's reach, the relationship will increase flexibility and provide significantly reduced transit charges for customer terminations. It also enhances Global Crossing's ability to deliver high-performance Tier 1 Internet connectivity into carrier facilities and enterprise locations throughout the east and southern Africa region.

WIOCC CEO Chris Wood said, "This strategic relationship with Global Crossing, with its comprehensive global network reach, significantly improves our ability to deliver end-to-end service to WIOCC customers in Africa and the rest of the world. We already offer the only direct fiber-optic route between east Africa and Europe, and with this new agreement in place we now have the capability to extend our reach to even more points on the globe."

WIOCC's 30 percent stake makes it the largest shareholder in EASSy, the 10,000km, 4.72Tbps subsea fiber-optic cable that runs along the east coast of Africa and has landing stations from South Africa to Port Sudan. EASSy gives WIOCC extensive reach along Africa's eastern seaboard, while onward connectivity to Europe and beyond is provided through multiple interconnect points with other fiber-optic systems. Global Crossing reaches more than 700 cities in more than 70 countries across North America, Latin America, and Europe. The two networks are interconnected in London, offering both service providers improved reach from their respective markets.

"Our shareholders own terrestrial networks that interconnect 20 African countries over more than 50,000km of optical fiber, serving more than 400 African locations," added WIOCC's COO, Ryan Sher.

Global Crossing's head of carrier sales for South Europe, Middle East, and Africa, Habib Issa, commented, "EASSy represents the majority of the international capacity available on Africa's east coast. WIOCC has unparalleled reach throughout eastern and southern Africa, and will play an important role in improving Internet connectivity throughout this region."

With African consumers and businesses increasingly demanding improved access to data-rich services and Internet content originating outside the continent, the WIOCC/Global Crossing relationship benefits African telcos and ISPs by improving their ability to deliver cost-effective, high-speed connectivity with the rest of the world. International carriers looking for better connectivity into Africa can now take advantage of Global Crossing's network as a convenient access mechanism for exchanging traffic directly with eastern and southern Africa using the WIOCC-EASSy cable and network.

Mobile Payments -- Fraud Waiting to Happen, Says Neural Technologies' Report.

(PRWEB) June 28, 2011

Mobile payments are one of the most exciting new developments in the telecoms sector, with tremendous growth expected over the next few years.

According to Gartner, mobile payment services are expected to reach US$245 billion in value worldwide by 2014.

As the use of mobile payments grows globally, so too does the risk of mobile payments fraud. Gartner, and other eminent research companies, predict that these services will be extremely attractive to fraudsters and those seeking vehicles for money laundering.

"Given the explosive growth of smartphones and other mobile devices, the increase in mobile commerce, and the migration of fraud attacks to these devices, using mobile fraud detection in mobile commerce environments is an imperative." (Gartner)

According to Neural Technologies, an appreciation of the fraud and risk threats posed by mobile payments can be achieved through understanding the various mobile payment products and services on offer, as well as the different technologies used to deliver them.

Mobile payments products and services include:

* Mobile Payments: such as paying for retail goods and services, internet shopping, low value items and business expenses

* Mobile Money Transfers: transferring money from one mobile phone to another and from mobile phones to banks

* Mobile Banking Services: such as bill payments and paying of salaries

The main technologies used to deliver mobile payments are:

* Mobile Over the Air Payments: employing technology such as WAP (Wireless Application Protocol), SMS text messaging, IVR (Interactive Voice Response) and USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data)

* Contactless Mobile Payments: often referred to as mobile proximity payments, such as NFC (Near Field Communications)

Neural Technologies has undertaken a comprehensive study of these technologies and services, producing an 11 page report with suggestions and recommendations on how to reduce fraud in mobile payment environments. The report is offered free of charge (and without obligation) to telecoms operators.

Commercial Director for Neural Technologies, Luke Taylor, said: "We have learnt a lot about managing fraud and risk in mobile payments from our work with one of the leading African telecoms operators. We have expanded this knowledge to include all the various services and technologies associated with mobile payments and are happy to share what we have learnt with other telecoms operators looking to roll out mobile payments".

Industry frets over serving Gens X & Y; Nobody knows what they want.(Conference notes)

Byline: Andrew Osterland

While straining to meet the retirement needs of baby boomers, the advisory business is starting to recognize that it faces another demographic challenge: finding a profitable way to deal with Generation X and Y investors who have less affinity to financial advisers than older investors do.

"I don't see my son bonding with a 55- or 56-year-old [financial consultant]," said Richard Franchella, senior managing director of RBC Wealth Management's private-client unit and moderator of a panel at the private-client conference of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association last week in New York.

Judging by a swath of retail executives at the conference, younger investors represent a scary prospect for typically middle-age to older advisers and their firms, who may not be prepared to offer the kind of service that younger investors want.

"This younger group is less engaged [with their investments] and they need more-customized solutions," said Stephen Gresham, a senior vice president in Fidelity Investments' private-client segment and a participant on the wealth management panel.

Typically, a Fidelity adviser's first contact with these investors involves a potential rollover of a 401(k) plan into an individual retirement account. With the increasingly job-mobile nature of younger Americans, 5,000 to 6,000 of these rollovers happen every day.

"To a person, their level of interest in investing is not high," Mr. Gresham said.

His fellow panelists shared similar observations on the challenge of serving younger investors who don't act like their parents and don't want what their parents want.

"Some of the younger family members we see just don't want to work with their parents' experts," said Melanie Schnoll Begun, a managing director at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC, who works on philanthropic-giving programs for ultrahigh-net-worth clients.

HARD-TO-REACH GROUP

The Gens X and Y investor profile emerging from research and anecdotal evidence is that of a group less engaged in investment planning and finances than their parents and also harder to reach and more risk-averse. They appear to be less loyal to their advisers and seek several sources for investment advice.

Another major differentiator is that younger investors clearly want and expect to use online media and non-traditional forms of communication for help with their finances, said Robert Waitman, director of financial services for the Internet Business Solutions Group at Cisco Systems Inc.

A recent study of 1,000 wealthy investors conducted by Mr. Waitman's group found that investors under 50 represent an underserved $18.6 billion revenue opportunity for the advisory industry.

The study confirmed that younger investors are using more advisers and are apt to drop advisers if they don't get what they want.

Mr. Waitman said what they want is more interaction, access to advisers through social networks, webcam conferencing, tablet PC applications and other high-tech tools that baby boomers and older investors aren't particularly interested in.

"They're used to texting, instant messaging and using all the tools," Mr. Waitman said. "If they're not satisfied with the service they get, they're not very loyal. Firms are starting to wake up to this. There's a real opportunity for first-mover advantages in this regard."

The challenge is not lost on Thomas Butch, executive vice president at Waddell & Reed Inc., which has 1,700 affiliated financial advisers.

"These new investors want to engage through new media that advisers haven't grown up with," he said, noting that advisory firms should have age peers for these clients.

Waddell & Reed plans to expand its adviser force this year and actively recruits younger candidates -- typically those several years out of college or career changers.

To address the challenge of meeting the expectations of younger clients, J.J.B. Hilliard W.L. Lyons LLC is training its advisers in the new technology.

"We want to equip our financial consultants to provide higher levels of service, often to younger clients," said James Allen, the firm's chief executive.

But like most securities firms, Hilliar Lyons is steering clear of social networking until it has more certainty concerning how much leeway the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority Inc. will grant advisers to communicate in such a freewheeling environment.

Still, some see opportunity in the generational shift.

In the ultrahigh-net-worth area, for instance, younger family members who now handle their finances through family offices may go out on their own.

"Over the next 10 to 15 years, we expect a number of single-family offices will close down" as younger members leave, Ms. Begun said. "That's the opportunity."

Erie, Pa., call center offers free PC training.

Byline: Jim Carroll

Sep. 28--West Corp. is offering computer basic training to job-hunters who need to get familiar with a keyboard and mouse.

West officials said the free, public computer instruction comes with no strings attached. But they also said they hope that those who take the training might consider applying for work at their company's call center, 2323 W. 38th St.

Lois Maranchick, West's local director of site operations, said the Erie program will be the first time West has offered a free, public computer training program at one of its sites in the United States. A similar training program was previously run at a Canadian site.

Vanessa Kenney-Clement, director of human relations at the West 38th Street call center, said, "Erie has been very good to West, and this is one way to give something back to the community."

The offer is for four hours of instruction to give new and novice computer users basic familiarity with a PC, the Windows operating system, the Microsoft Word program, and Internet Web browsers.

The instruction will be held at a classroom at West's West 38th Street center by the trainers who teach computer program skills to new workers that the company hires. Class size is limited to 24 people, and the training session for the first group is scheduled for 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Officials said other training programs will be scheduled as demand warrants. Those interested should call the human relations office at the local West center at 836-2400 to register or for more information.

About 600 people work at West's local call center, and the company officials who made the announcement Tuesday said they hope to hire 200 more people by Thanksgiving. West's Erie facility mainly handles incoming calls from people responding to television infomercials and other advertisements, but for the past two months, some of its employees have been doing database transfer work for Cingular Wireless, one of the facility's largest clients.

Kenney-Clement said she could see the need for basic computer training in the applicants the company gets.

"We see some people come in who are really struggling." She said the program will primarily help those re-entering the job market; senior citizens; or those who have previously worked in jobs that did not require computer use.

"I think this will be very valuable to the Erie community," said Tim Rowe, director of career services at the Erie Business Center, and one of the staff members from local schools and social service agencies who attended the announcement Tuesday. "It is a good start."

The church as a customer: sizing and selling church applications.(Contracting)

Churches are among the most striking architectural sights in many communities.

The unique architectural elements, high ceilings, and varying occupancy demands of churches can pose interesting challenges for HVACR contractors, whose job it is to market products and services to church leaders and correctly size and install the heating and cooling equipment in each building.

Some of these issues were addressed during a recent discussion on "The Wall," an Internet discussion board at www.heating help.com.

The News joined in the discussion and discovered some tips on sizing church jobs and marketing to church organizations, tasks often undertaken by both residential and commercial contractors.

Sizing The Job

The message on The Wall that initiated the discussion read in part: "I have been asked to quote replacement boilers in several area churches. Most of them have huge boilers that are fuel inefficient and probably grossly oversized, but I need to know for certain that they are. I am at a loss as to how I should calculate the heating load in cathedral-type buildings with vast expanses of stained glass windows, and unknown insulation values of the structure." (For more details about this application, see box on page 24.)

One contractor, Dave Bunnell of Boiler Professionals, Amboy, Ill., replied, "As with any larger structure, infiltration can only occur near outside walls, so I assume only the outer 15 feet of the structure as basis for the air changes per hour calculation. Also, when figuring infiltration air changes per hour, most sanctuary structures are much more airtight than the typical structure. The ceiling is a continuous, nearly airtight sheet of plaster." He noted typical structures have many partitions breaking the airtight surface of the ceiling, pointing out that there are few or no interruptions in most churches, so less air leaks at the ceiling. "Little air leakage at the top means much less air coming in at the base due to a reduced stack effect through the space," he said.

Bunnell noted that it is important to take church windows into consideration, figuring the R-value of windows about "halfway between single-pane and double-pane glass, due to the fact that the air layer between the windows is probably not very stable due to the leaky nature of old leaded glass windows with brittle caning."

Dan Holohan, founder of The Wall, suggested, "If it's steam heated, you may find that the output of the installed boiler and radiation are much less than the actual heat loss of the church. The undersized radiators would provide radiation, and also convective currents that didn't rise all the way to the ceiling.

"The air near the top of the church stayed cool all the time. When you add ceiling fans to these buildings, you actually increase the fuel usage during the winter because the fans stir the cooler air into the lower, heated air, causing the overall air temperature to stay below the thermostat's setting. That's why you don't often see those fans running during the winter."

Marketing To Churches

The News asked its Contractor Consultants about the unique aspects of church installations and the special steps necessary when marketing to church organizations.

"The churches with which we work are the result of satisfied customers, mostly commercial, that appreciate the work we do for them at their places of business," said Aaron York (Aaron York's Quality A/C, Indianapolis). "They become disenchanted with member repairs by those who 'are in the business' when comfort levels and supposedly 'free' costs become an embarrassment to them.

"They also find that the expected savings of such hit-or-miss maintenance flow down the drain of delayed attention, resulting in major expense. When such work is done on a time and material basis, we discount their repair billings by 10 percent.

"We have some churches that have seen the wisdom of placing their HVACR equipment under a full service contract where we become responsible for all materials, labor, maintenance inspections, filter changes, emergency calls, etc., for one budgeted monthly fee, which they plug into their annual budgeting, keeping everyone happy.

"The occasional necessary replacement, which is fewer than with 'call when it breaks,' seems to be well accepted."

Russ Donnici (Mechanical Air Service, San Jose, Calif.) has a unique approach. "Our church work is primarily through referrals. However, the nonprofit, tax-exempt company I started in 1995, Outreach Heating & Cooling, does get referrals to churches that have budget issues. We have provided free services and reduced cost services, as well as free consulting work when needed.

"I currently serve on the elder board of the church I have attended for the past 23 years, and we just approved a substantial upgrade replacement to our sanctuary system for sound-related and age issues. This was a concern for a long time, and when the unit was determined to need replacement, the upgrade was submitted."

The Power Of Referrals

"We have added several churches to our customer list over the past few years without any marketing plan at all," said Ann Kahn (Kahn Mechanical, Dallas). "Eight years ago, a large church contacted us, as they were taking quotes on their preventive maintenance service, and we were the successful bidder. Apparently, we have met their needs well, for they have recommended us to other churches, and the rest is history.

"We find church committees in charge of HVAC especially sensitive to the need for maintenance. Church clients choose our regular preventive maintenance service when they don't have their own staff person for the work."

Scott Getzschman (Getzschman Heating & Sheet Metal, Fremont, Neb.), noted, "The work we do for churches is usually word of mouth, and we do have churches with maintenance agreements. They can be very difficult, since with churches the property committees change often, so you can sometimes lose the work because you don't have a relationship with the new committee chairman. Church work can be very competitive, and you have to please many people.

"Our experience in smaller churches is, typically, if the systems aren't on a contract, they only get serviced if they fail. In larger churches, systems are usually on agreement; however, in the months between visits, the systems don't always get taken care of."

"Residential companies should seek expert advice before putting their reputation in front of the membership because you may now have hundreds of parishioners judging you weekly," cautioned Dave Dombrowski (Metro Services/ARS-ServiceMaster, Raleigh, N.C.).

"Church relationships must be built upon mutual trust, and respect is the key factor in dealing with the needs of the church."

MUSKEGON, Mich. -- When Don Bowen bids on church building HVAC service and replacement business, he can point to a binder full of recommendations and compliments from other churches.

"You get one or two and do a good job and away you go," said the owner of Bowen Refrigeration, Heating & Cooling in Muskegon. "Always get reference letters, too."

He also likes to get involved with each job by "doing his homework."

"I got one job because no one else would do it," he said. "The customer asked me how I could install A/C when no one else would do it. I told them I could install a custom-built coil and add air conditioning to it--no problem. And they have had no problems with their A/C."

On the day of a recent News visit, Bowen was in the middle of installing A/C in another church that other contractors said posed insurmountable problems. "I had bid the office area of this church in prior years," he said. "The maintenance person called us and said the church was interested in air conditioning the whole church. It provided a lot of unique problems, starting with tracking down the company that originally did the installation."

The air handler was installed in 1956. Don asked his wife and office manager, Jennifer, to see if she could track down information on the company that made the equipment. Using the Internet, she was able to find who took over the company after it was sold. The company gave her the number of the engineer who actually worked on the installation, and he sent Don the original paperwork, which was obtained from microfiche.

"I measured airflow to get ideas on what this air handler could handle. I figured how much airflow that unit could handle and how much cooling I could put on the equipment. We had a 2-ton, dual-circuited custom evaporator coil built, and it was piped to a 20-ton condenser on the roof. Coil Replacement Specialists (Okemos, Mich.) built the coil. They came out and took measurements and specifications. They did a great job; the coil was built in 10 days.

"We removed the existing trunk, built a new elbow, and installed the coil into the ductwork, which matches the ductwork. This is 20 tons of air conditioning in two 10-ton circuits.

"The original building was only a third of the size it is now. If you put your time into it, research it, and put all of your ducks in a row, you can make things happen. I had to size this job according to what I had to work with. If I hadn't gotten ahold of the original engineer, I probably would not have done the job. I could have recommended a replacement air-handling unit, but it may have been too much guess-work, which creates a lot of problems."

"I was able to do something else that no else that no one else would do.

[Editor's note: One visitor to The Wall, an online forum at www.heatinghelp.com, faced a challenging job: specifying replacement boilers for a cathedral-style church with stained glass windows. The following information is reprinted with permission from The Wall. What advice would you give if you had to size this job? E-mail your thoughts to John Hall at johnhall@achrnews.com.]

The church is a 60-year-old brick-faced building that is 175 feet long, 80 feet wide, and 54 feet high. The exterior walls consist of two courses of interlocking bricks at the core, with a brick facing added to the exterior and glazed tile brick on the interior. The interior tile extends 6 feet up the wall, and from there it becomes plaster finish to the ceiling line. The ceiling itself is tongue and grooved 2 1/2-inch planks, with a slate covering on the exterior. No other details of the roof are available.

There is a separate 150-ton cooling system serving six air handlers. The church members are adamant about not heating with forced air because of noise issues (older priests, soft voices, no amplifier systems).

All three entry doors to the sanctuary have airlock-type vestibules and are sizable areas unto themselves.

The biggest complaints registered over the years have been that the sunny side of the church overheated while the shaded side was always too cold.

All the nomenclature from the existing boiler has been removed over the years, so knowing what is currently there is at best a 'guesstimate' (somewhere around 2 million Btu, based on burner sizing).

The building has a full finished basement, which is used as a fellowship hall that is 60 percent earth embanked, but with two walkout entries to the ground-level parking lot areas.

There is no existing mechanical air ventilation system. The building had been heated for 60 years with a steel pipe in concrete radiant system. The steel piping has finally rotted and the custodian kept feeding water to the boilers daily to try and maintain heat all of last winter. Well, that destroyed the boilers in short order.

The windows are huge--10 feet wide by 30 feet high ending in arched tops; and are of single-pane stained glass. There is no exterior protective covering to act as a possible air space. I have suggested adding a protective covering, but they have concerns about the appearance.

At peak times, there are 800 people in the building; at other times, as few as 150.
