Fed: Bureau fears pirates may steal tsunami buoys

The weather bureau's worried proposed tsunami warning buoys between Australia and Indonesia
will be stolen by pirates and sold as scrap.

The Bureau of Meteorology plans to position the two buoys in international waters.

However .. bureau chief GEOFF LOVE says they're negotiating with the Indonesian government
to use its navy to make sure they aren't stolen and sold as scrap.

Dr LOVE's told a Senate estimates committee .. they've found their automatic weather
stations .. stolen off north-west Australia in the past .. on sale in Hong Kong.

The Boxing day tsunami .. which began off the Indonesian island of Sumatra in 2004
.. killed more than 225 thousand people and devastated coastal communities in other Asian
nations.
