A few hours after returning to her Schenectady home from Christmas shopping in December 1985, Mary Beth Tinning smothered her 4-month-old child, Tami Lynn. She later told investigators that the baby's crying upset her.

Less than two weeks before Christmas 1986, four people were found shot to death in a home in the Columbia County hamlet of East Chatham.

Wyley Gates, a relative of three of the victims, was later convicted of conspiring to carry out the murders but was acquitted of committing the actual murders.
