Qld: Parliament hears claim of Volkers call to minister
BRISBANE, April 28 AAP - Queensland Police Minister Tony McGrady has sought a reporton allegations that swimming coach Scott Volkers called a cabinet minister on the dayhe was charged with sex offences.
Opposition police spokesman Vaughan Johnson referred in state parliament today to apolice investigation into Telstra phone records which showed Mr Volkers, the nationalwomen's swimming coach, called an unlisted number for Industrial Relations Minister GordonNuttall.
Mr Johnson said the phone records were the subject of a briefing note to Mr McGradyand Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson.
He said police had been barred from making further inquiries into the records.
Mr McGrady told parliament he would seek a report on the issue raised by Mr Johnson.
"I think the implications of that question would suggest that something untoward ishappening in the Queensland Police Service, and that is something I am not prepared toaccept," Mr McGrady said.
"I am happy to take on board the question."
Mr McGrady said he had faith in the integrity of Mr Atkinson and the police service.
In September last year, the Director of Public Prosecutions dropped seven indecencycharges against Mr Volkers, who had been accused of fondling teenage girls he coachedin the mid-1980s.
A report on the case by the Crime and Misconduct Commission earlier this year foundmistakes had been made in the process leading to the dropping of the charges.
But the report said there was no evidence of misconduct.
