NSW: Cleaners set to strike tomorrow

About 2,000 government cleaners will walk off the job tomorrow, leaving New South Wales
police stations, court houses and schools dirty for up to four days.

The Miscellaneous Workers Union says the cleaners employed by the Menzies company have
called the strike in protest against a plan to cut working hours.

The cleaners have refused to work at 1,100 government sites, mainly public and high
schools, from tomorrow until Tuesday, April 10.

Menzies is one of three companies contracted by the state government to clean all state schools.

Union state secretary ANNIE OWENS says cleaners currently have only nine minutes to
clean classrooms.

But she says under the proposed cuts, Menzies wants to slash working hours by 24 per
cent - leaving cleaners about six minutes to clean each classroom.

Ms OWENS says talks between the union, the government and Menzies will continue tonight,
but the situation is unlikely to change.
