HONDURAS - FROM ENERGY SHORTAGE TO SURPLUS.

As 1995 began, Honduras had just completed eight months of power rationing due to insufficient rainfall to fill the El Cajon dam reservoir. Every home business and factory did without electricity for between 6 and 14 hours a day. The drought was largely responsible for the country's negative economic growth in 1994. The 1995 rainy season replenished El Cajon, and with the addition of several thermal diesel power plants, the Honduran energy picture has taken a 180 degree turn. The National Energy Co. (ENEE) says it can meet Honduras' energy demand through 1997. …
